About Me

My Running Journey

I’m Mort, a long-distance runner and certified running coach with over 10 years of experience in helping athletes achieve their goals. I’ve completed 30 marathons, several ultras, and countless other races over the years, and I’m passionate about helping others discover the joy of running. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re a seasoned marathoner, I’m here to guide you toward your best self as a runner.

Running has been a significant part of my life, teaching me resilience, patience, and the value of setting and achieving long-term goals. Now, I dedicate myself to coaching adult runners who are committed to the process, looking to improve, and eager to push their limits in a healthy, sustainable way.

My Coaching Philosophy

I believe in a tailored, science-based approach to running, one that respects both the art and science of the sport. My coaching philosophy is rooted in two key frameworks: the Jack Daniels formula and the Norwegian-Kenyan schools of distance running. Here’s what that means for you as an athlete:

  • Jack Daniels Formula. This tried-and-true method is based on precise training zones and workouts designed to improve specific physiological systems. By focusing on key elements such as VDOT and VO2 max, I create training plans that maximize your running potential without overtraining.
  • Norwegian-Kenyan Approach. This philosophy emphasizes balancing volume and intensity. It focuses on quality aerobic work, controlled workouts, and recovery as a priority. These principles align perfectly with the needs of adult runners, ensuring long-term improvement and minimizing the risk of injury.

Together, these schools of thought help me create training plans that are individualized and data-driven, ensuring that each workout brings you closer to your goal without unnecessary strain.

Why Train with Coach Mort?

Training with me is more than just running workouts; it’s about working together to understand your unique needs, strengths, and goals. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Personalized Coaching. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all training. Every runner is different, and I build each plan based on your specific goals, fitness level, and injury history.
  • Data-Driven Insights. I rely on data from your training (whether it’s training load, heart rate, pace, or cadence) to adjust your plan. This way, we can track your progress and make sure you’re improving safely.
  • Focus on Longevity. Injuries are the enemy of progress. My plans are designed with injury prevention in mind, ensuring that you stay healthy, strong, and on track to reach your goals.
  • Holistic Approach. While we focus on running, we also incorporate strength training, nutrition guidance, and recovery techniques to make sure you’re well-rounded as an athlete.

The Value of Coaching for Adult Runners

As an adult runner, you’re likely balancing training with work, family, and life’s other demands. My goal is to help you integrate running into your life in a way that is enjoyable, sustainable, and effective. Whether you’re training for your first marathon or chasing a PR, I’m here to guide you with:

  • Flexible Training Plans. Built around your schedule and commitments, with the understanding that life happens.
  • Constant Communication. I check in regularly to make sure you’re progressing and adjusting if needed.
  • Long-Term Development. Running is a journey, and we’re in it for the long haul. I help you improve not just for your next race, but for every race after that.
